The war between "us" and "them" has been waged since the start of colonization, when the West claimed superiority and used it to justify taking over lands belonging to indigenous groups. This rhetoric has repeatedly been weaponized to separate Black, Brown, Asian, Hispanic, Latino & Latina, Native American, and immigrant communities from society. By "othering" these communities and grouping them under the category "them," those in power can create a sense of separation and distance between themselves and those they seek to oppress. This design shifts the weight of these words giving power back to "them."
